Whitespark 2026: Review Recency Climbs to 11th Most Important Local Ranking Factor
What happened
Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors report — the annual industry survey of local SEO practitioners — now ranks review recency as the 11th most important factor for Google's Local Pack and Maps results. In the 2023 edition, it ranked 20th.
The jump reflects what local search practitioners have been observing on the ground. Joy Hawkins of Sterling Sky, one of the most respected voices in local SEO, has documented cases where businesses saw ranking drops after going six to eight weeks without a new review — and recoveries when fresh reviews started coming in again.
Review signals overall now account for roughly 16% of Local Pack ranking weight in the 2026 survey, with recency, velocity (how quickly new reviews come in), and owner responses all contributing. The primary category of your Google Business Profile remains the single most important factor, but the gap between "set it and forget it" factors and active signals like reviews continues to narrow.
What this means for tradespeople
If you're a plumber who did brilliant work in March but hasn't had a new Google review since, your ranking is likely suffering — even if your total review count and average rating are strong.
Google increasingly treats reviews like a freshness signal. A business with 15 reviews from the last three months looks more trustworthy and relevant than one with 80 reviews that dried up six months ago. For tradespeople who work seasonally — roofers busy in autumn, landscapers quiet in winter — this means the quieter months can erode your search visibility just when you need leads most.
The practical implication is straightforward: it's not enough to build up a bank of reviews and stop. You need a consistent trickle of new ones. Even one or two per week is enough to maintain the freshness signal that Google is looking for.
BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey backs this up from the customer side too — 74% of consumers now say they only care about reviews from the last three months.
What to do about it
The fix is habit, not volume. After every completed job, send a quick review request. TapReview is a £9/month tool that helps UK tradespeople get more Google reviews by sending automated review requests via WhatsApp and SMS after every job — so the request goes out while the customer is still happy and the work is fresh in their mind.
If you're not ready for a tool, a simple WhatsApp message with your Google review link works. The important thing is consistency — one review a week beats ten in January and nothing until June.
