Unconfirmed Google Algorithm Update Hit Rankings Around September 3 — What Tradespeople Should Know

What happened

Top SEO analysts have confirmed that Google pushed a significant, unannounced algorithm update around 3–4 September 2026. Glenn Gabe reported on 12 September that he waited a full day for the data to stack up before going public, describing it as an "unconfirmed update that Google pushed out in early September." Marie Haynes independently confirmed evidence of a significant change dating to around 2 September.

Google has said nothing. The Search Status Dashboard still lists the August 2026 spam update as the most recent confirmed ranking change. That update rolled out on 18 August and lasted roughly two days and 16 hours — this new shift is separate and distinct.

Analysis from Single Grain confirms the update is real and advises businesses to check their early-September Search Console data carefully before making any changes.

What this means for tradespeople

If you've noticed your website traffic drop in the first two weeks of September, this update could be the cause. Local businesses — including tradespeople — are often affected by ranking changes because Google's local search results are tightly connected to its main algorithm.

This doesn't mean you need to panic. Unconfirmed updates are common, and many ranking shifts reverse or settle within two to three weeks. The worst thing you can do is start rewriting your website or deleting pages in a rush.

What matters most right now is your Google Business Profile and your reviews. Even when website rankings fluctuate, businesses with strong review profiles, recent reviews, and complete GBP listings tend to hold their local pack positions. If your website dipped but your Google Maps listing is still showing up, your reviews are doing their job.

What to do about it

Don't change your website yet. Wait at least two weeks for rankings to stabilise before drawing any conclusions.

Check your Google Business Profile. Make sure your profile is complete, your business hours are accurate, and your photos are up to date. A strong profile buffers you against algorithm volatility.

Keep collecting reviews. Fresh, genuine reviews signal to Google that your business is active and trusted. This matters whether or not there's an algorithm update in play.
