UK Construction PMI Crashes to 38.2 in May — Six-Year Low as Housing Collapses
What happened
The UK Construction Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) fell to 38.2 in May 2026, down from 39.7 in April — its lowest level since May 2020 when the pandemic halted projects across the country.
Any reading below 50 signals contraction, and 38.2 represents severe decline. Activity is now falling at its fastest rate outside of the pandemic period since 2009.
Residential housebuilding was the weakest segment. New orders fell at the fastest pace in six years as project delays, deferred investment, and budget cuts dried up demand. Input cost inflation accelerated to its highest level since June 2022, driven by rising fuel, energy, and transport costs. Supplier delivery times lengthened at the fastest pace since December 2022, partly due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Jordan Smith, regional director at Egis UK, said the data "highlights another challenging month for the UK construction sector, with activity declining across all major areas."
What this means for tradespeople
When the construction pipeline shrinks, competition for every job intensifies. If you're a builder, plasterer, or roofer relying on new-build work, there are simply fewer projects to go around. The repair and maintenance (RMI) market is more resilient — homeowners still need boilers fixed and kitchens refitted — but even here, cost-conscious customers are shopping around more carefully.
That makes your online reputation your sharpest competitive edge. When a homeowner in Manchester is choosing between three plumbers, the one with 47 genuine Google reviews and a 4.8-star rating wins the call. The one with 3 reviews doesn't even get considered.
What to do about it
In a tighter market, the tradespeople who stay visible are the ones who keep working. That means keeping your Google Business Profile active with recent photos and posts, and making sure every completed job turns into a review request. TapReview is a £9/month tool that helps UK tradespeople get more Google reviews by sending automated review requests via WhatsApp and SMS after every job.
