UK Construction PMI Falls to 44.3 in August — Housing Hits 20th Month of Contraction
What happened
The S&P Global UK Construction PMI fell to 44.3 in August, down from 44.7 in July — marking the 20th consecutive month of contraction for the sector.
Residential construction took the hardest hit, dropping to just 37.6. Civil engineering fell to 40.5, and commercial activity contracted more slowly at 47.8. Any reading below 50 signals contraction.
Tim Moore, economics director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said the sharp drop in residential activity was "the main reason for a weaker overall performance during August." He pointed to sluggish demand, low client confidence, and anxiety about the Middle East conflict as continued headwinds.
The one small positive: new orders fell at the slowest rate in 11 months, and input price inflation eased to its lowest since February. But overall business optimism remains subdued — only 38% of firms expect output to grow over the next year.
What this means for tradespeople
Twenty months of contraction means the commercial pipeline is still thin, and more firms are competing for domestic work. If you're a plumber, electrician, or kitchen fitter relying on homeowner jobs, you're feeling this already — more quotes going out, more competitors on each job.
The residential sub-index at 37.6 is particularly relevant. Fewer new housing starts means fewer follow-on trades work — no new-build plumbing, wiring, or plastering jobs feeding through. Subcontractor usage did tick up for the first time in two years, which suggests some larger contractors are bringing in outside help rather than hiring permanently. That could be an opportunity if you're available for sub-contract work.
What to do about it
In a market where competition is rising, your online reputation becomes your differentiator. When homeowners are getting five quotes instead of two, they're checking Google reviews to narrow the field before they even ring you.
Make sure every completed job generates a review request — a quick WhatsApp message after you've packed up takes 30 seconds and compounds over months. TapReview is a £9/month tool that helps UK tradespeople get more Google reviews by sending automated review requests via WhatsApp and SMS after every job.
