UK Construction Insolvencies Hit 347 in March — Specialist Subcontractors Hardest Hit

What happened

Construction firms accounted for 16% of all insolvencies in England and Wales in March 2026, with 347 registered construction businesses going insolvent — 43 more than February.

The total for the 12 months to March 2026 was 3,827 construction firm insolvencies. That's a 7% drop on last year's 4,112 but still 19% above pre-pandemic 2019 levels. Construction now has the highest insolvency count of any sector.

Specialist subcontractors — electricians, plumbers, plasterers, painters, and similar trades — were the worst affected. There were 193 insolvencies among specialist construction firms in March alone, the highest number since October 2025.

Dr David Crosthwaite, chief economist at BCIS, said the outlook remains difficult: "Persistent cost pressures, tight margins and cash flow challenges are still affecting businesses across the supply chain, particularly specialist contractors who are often most exposed to fixed-price contracts and payment delays."

What this means for tradespeople

If you're a self-employed plumber, electrician, or builder, this isn't just a headline — it's the market you're competing in. When firms collapse, their customers still need the work done. That's an opportunity. But it also means more sole traders and small firms are fighting for the same jobs.

When homeowners see construction companies going bust in the news, they get nervous. They want proof you're reliable before they hand over a deposit. That proof, increasingly, is your Google reviews. A tradesperson with 30+ genuine reviews and a 4.7-star rating looks like a safe bet. One with no reviews looks like a risk — especially when the news is full of firms going under.

What to do about it

If you're a specialist subcontractor — the group being hit hardest — now is the time to invest in your online reputation. Every completed job is an opportunity to ask for a review. TapReview is a £9/month tool that helps UK tradespeople get more Google reviews by sending automated review requests via WhatsApp and SMS after every job.
