ONS: UK Construction Output Falls for Fourth Consecutive Month in August
What happened
The Office for National Statistics published its latest construction output figures on 15 October, confirming that total construction output fell 0.2% in August 2026 — the fourth consecutive monthly decline.
Year on year, total output dropped 1.8%. New work was hit hardest, down 5.8%, while repair and maintenance grew 3.6%. Over the three months to August, total output fell 1.0%, with private new housing the biggest drag — down 3.2% in the quarter.
The data follows a pattern of weakening output through 2026, with monthly falls recorded in May (-0.8%), June (-0.1%), July and now August.
What this means for tradespeople
The headline numbers are about big construction projects and housebuilding, but the ripple effects reach every self-employed tradesperson.
Fewer new builds means fewer follow-on jobs — the kitchens, bathrooms, electrics, and decorating that come after a house is finished. When the pipeline shrinks, more tradespeople compete for the same pool of domestic repair and maintenance work. That's the segment still growing (up 3.6% year on year), but the competition within it is getting fiercer.
If you're a plumber, electrician or general builder relying on new-build work, the numbers are a clear signal: domestic customers — homeowners who need repairs, renovations and upgrades — are where the work is right now.
What to do about it
When competition tightens, the tradespeople who win work are the ones homeowners can find and trust quickly. That means:
- Keep your Google reviews current. Homeowners comparing three plumbers will pick the one with recent, genuine reviews. A profile with 15 reviews from 2024 loses to one with 30 from 2026.
- Make sure your Google Business Profile is complete and accurate. Hours, service area, photos of recent work — these all affect whether you show up in local search results.
- Ask every satisfied customer for a review. In a tighter market, every five-star review compounds your advantage over competitors who don't ask.
TapReview is a £9/month tool that helps UK tradespeople get more Google reviews by sending automated review requests via WhatsApp and SMS after every job.
