Google Tests Redesigned Local Knowledge Panels in Search Results
What happened
Google is testing a redesigned layout for local knowledge panels — the business information cards that appear when someone searches for a specific company or tradesperson on Google Search.
The test was first spotted by local SEO expert Ben Fisher on LinkedIn and reported by Search Engine Roundtable on 22 October 2026. The redesigned panel repositions the business name, star ratings, description, and action buttons (like "Directions" and "Call") relative to the business photos. The bottom section of the panel is also tightened up, according to Optimixed's summary.
The change brings the desktop version closer to how local panels already look on mobile. SERoundtable's Barry Schwartz noted that he couldn't reproduce the test after a full day of trying, suggesting it's a limited rollout.
This is the latest in a string of Google Business Profile interface changes this month. Google has also been testing advanced performance reports, moving Posts higher in local panels, and requiring sign-in to view reviews on Maps.
What this means for tradespeople
This is a visual test, not a functional change — your reviews, photos, and contact details aren't going anywhere. But layout changes affect what customers see first.
If Google moves your star rating and review count to a more prominent position (as the test suggests), that makes your review profile even more of a first impression. A plumber with 47 five-star reviews will look more credible than one with 3 reviews if both appear in a redesigned panel that leads with ratings.
It also reinforces what we've seen all month: Google is actively iterating on Business Profiles. They're testing better analytics, higher Post placement, sign-in requirements for reviews, and now layout redesigns. The message is clear — Google wants Business Profiles to be more engaging and interactive.
What to do about it
You don't need to do anything specific about this test. But it's a good prompt to check your profile is in shape:
- Make sure your photos are current. The redesigned panel gives photos a different weight in the layout. Fresh, professional photos of your work stand out.
- Keep your review profile growing. If this layout puts star ratings front and centre, a healthy review count matters more than ever. Learn how to get more Google reviews as a tradesperson.
- Check your profile is complete. An optimised Google Business Profile with accurate hours, services, and a filled-out description performs better in any layout.
