Google Search Ranking Volatility Spikes Late October — No Confirmed Update

What happened

Multiple SEO tracking tools detected significant ranking volatility in Google Search results on 24 and 27 October 2026, according to Search Engine Roundtable.

Barry Schwartz reported a "larger spike in volatility" on 27 October, following an earlier burst on 24 October that was captured by many third-party tracking tools. The volatility followed earlier unconfirmed updates on 16, 20 and 21 October.

Google has not confirmed any algorithm update. The last confirmed update was the September 2026 Spam Update, which finished rolling out on 8 October after nearly 14 days.

What this means for tradespeople

If you've noticed your Google Business Profile appearing lower in local search results — or higher — over the past week, this could be why. Unconfirmed updates can shift local rankings temporarily or permanently.

For most tradespeople, the practical impact is limited. Google tweaks its algorithm constantly, and local rankings depend heavily on reviews, proximity and profile completeness rather than the kind of content signals that major algorithm updates target.

That said, if your rankings have dropped noticeably since late October, it's worth checking the basics: is your Google Business Profile complete and accurate? Are your recent reviews positive? Have you posted any updates recently? These are the signals that keep your listing stable through algorithm fluctuations.

What to do about it

Don't panic. Check your Google Business Profile performance dashboard to see if impressions or clicks have changed. If they've dropped, review your profile for accuracy — correct categories, up-to-date hours, fresh photos and a steady flow of recent reviews are your best protection against ranking shifts.
