Google Removes Direct Call Button From Mobile Local Pack — Calls Drop 50-70%

What happened

Google has removed the direct "Call" button from organic listings in the mobile Local Pack — the three-business map results that appear when someone searches for a service near them.

Previously, a customer searching "plumber near me" could tap a blue Call button directly from the search results to ring a business. Now, they have to tap into the full Business Profile first, then find the call icon from there.

The change has been rolling out since early 2026. Multiple industry reports confirm businesses are seeing 50–70% drops in inbound calls from Google Maps as a direct result.

Google's paid products — Local Services Ads (LSAs) and Google Ads with call extensions — still feature prominent one-tap call buttons. The organic listings no longer do.

What this means for tradespeople

If you've noticed fewer calls from your Google Business Profile in recent months, this is likely why. It's not your reviews dropping or your ranking slipping — it's a design change that adds friction between the customer and your phone number.

For tradespeople who rely on emergency or high-intent searches — "emergency electrician," "boiler repair near me," "locksmith 24 hour" — this matters most. Those customers want the fastest route to a real person. An extra tap might sound trivial, but in digital marketing, every additional step loses a percentage of potential customers.

The practical effect: Google is pushing local businesses towards paying for the visibility they used to get free. Businesses running Local Services Ads still get the instant call button. Everyone else has to hope the customer clicks through to their profile first.

What to do about it

Make sure your Google Business Profile is fully complete and compelling — when customers do click through, your profile needs to convert. Add recent photos of your work, keep your services list updated, and ensure your phone number is correct.

Consider adding a "Request a Quote" or booking link to your profile. Google is increasingly favouring action buttons over phone calls, and having an online booking option gives customers a second way to reach you.

Most importantly, keep collecting Google reviews. Even with the call button gone, the local pack still shows your star rating and review count. A strong review profile is what makes someone tap through to your full listing in the first place.
