Google Now Pauses All New Reviews When It Detects a Spam Attack on Your Profile
What happened
Google has started emailing business owners when its systems detect a spike in spam reviews on their Business Profile. The email, titled "Protecting your Business Profile from spam reviews," tells owners that Google has removed the spam reviews so they don't affect the business's star rating.
But there's a catch: while the spam spike is being dealt with, Google pauses all new reviews, ratings, and photos on the listing for several days. That means genuine customers who try to leave a review during this window will find they can't.
Google hasn't officially confirmed the behaviour or published the email text. The Search Status Dashboard shows nothing — this isn't a ranking update. It appears to be an automated spam-defence system operating quietly in the background.
What this means for tradespeople
This is mostly good news. If a competitor or disgruntled customer floods your profile with fake 1-star reviews, Google is now catching it automatically and removing the spam before it tanks your rating.
The downside is the review pause. If you've just finished a big job and your customer tries to leave a review during the freeze, it won't go through. You won't know why, and neither will they. For a tradesperson who might only get a handful of reviews a month, losing even a few days of review collection can feel like a setback.
There's also the risk of false positives. One SEO consultant flagged that a business which genuinely earns a burst of reviews — after a busy month or a promotion — could trigger the same spam detector. The system can't always tell the difference between an attack and a good week.
What to do about it
- Check your email. If you get the "Protecting your Business Profile" email, don't panic. Google has already handled the spam reviews and your rating should be unaffected.
- Warn your customers. If reviews aren't going through, it's likely a temporary pause. Ask them to try again in a few days.
- Keep collecting reviews steadily. A consistent flow of reviews is less likely to trigger the spam detector than long gaps followed by sudden bursts. TapReview is a £9/month tool that helps UK tradespeople get more Google reviews with one tap — building exactly the kind of steady review velocity that keeps your profile healthy.
- Don't retaliate. If you suspect a competitor is behind the spam attack, report it through Google's dedicated form — don't leave fake reviews on their profile in response.
