Google Lens Now Surfaces Reviews When You Photograph a Shopfront

What happened

Google Lens with Gemini now lets users photograph any shopfront or business sign and instantly surface reviews, opening hours, busy times, and detailed business attributes — all without typing a search.

The feature, which has been rolling out through Google Maps and Search, uses augmented reality to recognise business signage and match it to Google Business Profile data. A customer walking past your premises can point their phone at your van, shop sign, or window display and immediately see your star rating, recent reviews, photos, and whether you're open.

Google's own documentation confirms that Lens with Gemini allows users to "photograph any shopfront and instantly ask questions about opening hours, reviews, or availability." The system cross-references its database of 250 million places with Street View imagery to identify businesses visually.

What this means for tradespeople

For tradespeople with a visible premises — a workshop, a yard, even a branded van parked on a job — this changes the game. Someone walking past can now check your reviews before they even know your business name.

If you're an electrician with a branded van parked outside a customer's house, a neighbour could photograph it and see your Google reviews in seconds. If those reviews are strong, that's free advertising. If your profile is empty or has a 3.5-star rating, you've just lost a potential customer you never knew existed.

The feature also means your Google Business Profile photos matter more than ever. High-quality exterior shots of your premises, your van signage, and your team at work help Google's visual recognition match you correctly. Businesses with incomplete profiles or no photos are effectively invisible to visual search.

What to do about it

Make sure your Google Business Profile has clear, high-resolution photos of your business exterior, signage, and any branded vehicles. Fill in every attribute Google offers — services, areas covered, contact methods. Keep your hours accurate and your reviews flowing. Google's visual search can only surface what's actually on your profile.
