Google Bans Staff-Name Review Requests and On-Premises Review Kiosks

What happened

Google updated its Maps review policy on 17 April 2026, adding two explicit bans under its rating manipulation rules:

  1. Staff-name review requests are banned. Businesses can no longer ask customers to mention specific employees by name in reviews, or set review quotas for staff. Google's policy now bars "merchants requesting that staff solicit reviews that include specific content, including content that identifies a staff member."

  2. On-premises review kiosks are banned. Pressuring or directing customers to leave a review while they're still on your premises — via a tablet, kiosk, or shared device — is now a policy violation.

Google is enforcing these rules at scale using its Gemini AI, which can detect patterns like review clusters from the same location, identical phrasing, or reviews submitted within minutes of each other. Profiles caught violating the policy risk having reviews removed, star ratings stripped, or the ability to receive new reviews suspended entirely.

Importantly, customers who organically mention a team member by name in their own words are fine. The ban targets businesses that coach or incentivise the mention.

What this means for tradespeople

Most tradespeople won't have a review kiosk in a lobby — but many do something similar without realising it. Handing your phone to a customer at the end of a job and asking them to "leave a quick review before I go" falls into the same territory as on-premises pressure. So does standing over someone's shoulder while they type.

The staff-name ban is less relevant for sole traders, but if you run a team — say a plumbing firm with three engineers — asking customers to "mention Dave by name" is now explicitly against Google's rules.

The safest approach is the simplest: send a review request by text or WhatsApp after you've left the property. The customer reviews in their own time, in their own words, with no pressure. That's compliant with every rule Google has.
