Google Bans Review Kiosks, Staff Quotas, and Incentives in April 2026 Policy Update
What happened
Google updated its Maps review policy on 16–17 April 2026, adding several explicit bans to its Rating Manipulation rules. The changes target three common review collection practices:
Review kiosks and on-premises devices — tablets at the front desk, QR code stands in the waiting room, or handing a customer your phone in the driveway are now formally non-compliant. Google's language is clear: merchants should not "require or pressure users to leave ratings while on the premises."
Staff quotas and leaderboards — setting targets like "we need 10 new reviews this week" or tying bonuses to review counts is now explicitly banned. Google treats quotas as evidence of biased solicitation.
Incentivised reviews — offering discounts, free services, loyalty points, or any benefit in exchange for a review is prohibited. This includes offering incentives to revise or remove a negative review.
Google's enforcement systems now use GPS, IP, and device fingerprinting to catch violations. In 2025, Google blocked or removed 292 million reviews that violated its policies — and the same systems are now applying the new rules.
What this means for tradespeople
If you're an electrician who hands a tablet to the homeowner before leaving, or a plumber who offers a £10 discount for a review — those practices now put your Google profile at risk.
The good news: the most effective review collection method was never any of those things. Sending a polite WhatsApp or SMS message a few hours after completing a job — when the customer has had time to appreciate the work — consistently outperforms on-site requests. It's personal, low-pressure, and fully compliant with Google's updated policy.
What to do about it
Stop using review kiosks, tablets, or any on-premises review collection devices immediately. Remove any incentive offers tied to reviews — including loyalty programme perks.
Instead, send a personalised review request via WhatsApp or SMS after every job. TapReview is a £9/month tool that helps UK tradespeople get more Google reviews by sending automated review requests via WhatsApp and SMS after every job — fully compliant with Google's policy.
