Google Tests Paying Publishers When AI Overviews Use Their Content

What happened

Google is piloting a new programme that pays publishers when their content is used to generate answers in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Gemini. The pilot, spotted in Search Console dashboards in September, adds an "AI earnings" widget that shows monthly payouts based on how significantly a publisher's content contributed to AI-generated answers.

At least dozens of publishers have been approached. Compensation is tied to content contribution during answer generation — not to clicks or links after the answer appears. Google describes the initiative as an "early-stage learning pilot."

Early reports suggest payouts are small, and the programme is more attractive to small and mid-sized publishers than to large media companies. But the signal matters: Google is acknowledging that AI search uses publisher content, and is testing ways to compensate it.

What this means for tradespeople

This doesn't affect you directly — yet. But it reveals where Google search is heading, and that matters for every tradesperson who relies on Google to find customers.

AI Overviews already appear in 39% of desktop searches, and when a homeowner asks Google "best plumber near me," the AI increasingly picks one or two businesses to recommend — not a list of ten. The businesses it picks are the ones with strong reviews, complete profiles, and content that AI systems trust.

If Google is now paying publishers for content quality in AI answers, it confirms that AI search rewards trust signals. For tradespeople, your Google reviews ARE your trust signal. They're the data point AI uses to decide whether to recommend you.

What to do about it
