ChatGPT Now Surfaces Yelp Reviews for Local Service Recommendations
What happened
Yelp has signed a data licensing deal with OpenAI, giving ChatGPT access to 330 million user reviews and over 8 million business listings. When someone asks ChatGPT for a local recommendation — "find me a good plumber" or "best electrician near me" — the AI now pulls in Yelp reviews, ratings, and photos to inform its answer.
More significantly, Yelp's "Request a Quote" feature is now rolling out inside ChatGPT. Users can ask about a local service provider, read AI-summarised reviews, and request a quote — all without leaving the conversation. Yelp routes the enquiry through its own system to eligible businesses.
The deal is non-exclusive, meaning Yelp can strike similar agreements with other AI companies. Financial terms were not disclosed.
What this means for tradespeople
This is the clearest sign yet that AI chatbots are becoming a genuine lead generation channel — not just a novelty for tech enthusiasts.
BrightLocal's 2026 survey found that 45% of consumers now use AI tools for local business recommendations, up from just 6% a year earlier. The Yelp-ChatGPT deal shows how that shift is being built: review platforms are licensing their data to AI companies, and those AI companies are turning reviews into recommendations and leads.
Right now, this deal is US-focused — Yelp's coverage of UK tradespeople is limited. But the pattern matters. Google is already using Gemini to recommend individual businesses in voice search. When AI tools recommend a business, they're pulling from reviews, ratings, and profile completeness — the same signals that determine your Google ranking.
If you're an electrician, plumber, or builder, the takeaway is simple: your reviews are no longer just visible on Google. They're being fed into AI systems that decide whether to recommend you or your competitor. The businesses that get recommended will be the ones with recent, authentic, high-rated reviews across platforms.
What to do about it
Keep your Google Business Profile complete and up to date — this is still the single most important thing you can do for AI visibility. TapReview is a £9/month tool that helps UK tradespeople get more Google reviews by sending automated review requests via WhatsApp and SMS after every job.
Beyond Google, make sure your business details are consistent across any platform where you have a presence. AI tools are pulling from multiple sources, and inconsistent information (different phone numbers, outdated addresses) hurts your chances of being recommended.
