Google May 2026 Core Update Rolling Out — Home Services Hit Hardest in Local Pack

What happened

Google's May 2026 core update started rolling out at 08:40 PDT on 21 May — the second core update of the year. The rollout is expected to take up to two weeks, with completion estimated around 4 June.

Early data from Whitespark's 540-query study shows local pack volatility is concentrated in verticals where AI Overviews now appear — an average 68% of local business queries in high-commercial-intent industries like plumbing, electrical, and home repair. Digital Applied's analysis confirms that home services, medical, legal, and financial verticals are seeing the sharpest early-rollout movement — the same pattern that played out during the March 2026 core update.

AI Overviews now intercept the majority of local searches before users ever see the traditional local pack. AI local packs show roughly 32% as many businesses as the legacy 3-pack, meaning fewer tradespeople are being surfaced to potential customers.

What this means for tradespeople

If you're a plumber, electrician, or builder, your trade falls squarely in the most affected category. The local pack — those three business listings that appear at the top of Google Maps results — is being reshuffled during the rollout. Some tradespeople will see their visibility drop temporarily; others will gain ground.

The businesses holding steady tend to have one thing in common: a complete, active Google Business Profile with recent reviews. Google's algorithm is increasingly rewarding profiles that show signs of life — fresh photos, regular posts, and a steady stream of new reviews.

What to do about it

Don't panic and don't make sweeping changes to your website while the update is still rolling out. Google recommends waiting at least a week after completion before reacting.

Instead, focus on the basics that matter regardless of the update:

The update should finish rolling out by early June. We'll report on the final impact once the dust settles.
