Google Business Profiles Now Lose Visibility After 30 Days of Inactivity

What happened

Multiple local SEO analysts and tracking tools have documented a consistent pattern through the first half of 2026: Google Business Profiles that go 30 or more days without activity are seeing measurable drops in how often Google surfaces them in local search results.

Google hasn't officially announced a "30-day rule," but the behaviour is consistent and well-documented across monitoring tools. Profiles left idle for a month show real declines in impressions and map pack appearances, while profiles updated weekly hold their position. Google's local algorithm now timestamps every event on your profile — new posts, new photos, answered questions, updated attributes, and review responses — and treats a stale profile as a weaker signal.

This aligns with Google's broader 2026 push toward rewarding "active" Business Profiles, which was confirmed in earlier algorithm analysis showing that interaction signals like photo views, review reads, and post engagement are now weighted more heavily in local rankings.

What this means for tradespeople

If you set up your Google Business Profile six months ago and haven't touched it since, you're likely losing visibility right now — even if you have good reviews. Google is treating your profile like an abandoned shopfront.

For a sole trader who's out on jobs all day, this might feel like yet another thing to manage. But the fix is genuinely small: 20 minutes a week is enough to keep your profile active and avoid the decay.

What to do about it

Upload one photo a week — a completed job, your van, your tools. It takes 30 seconds. Respond to every Google review within 24 hours, even if it's just a short thank you. If you're collecting fresh reviews regularly, that alone counts as profile activity. Post a Google Business Profile update once a week — even a short line about a recent job or a seasonal service you offer.

The tradespeople who do this consistently will stay in the map pack. The ones who don't will quietly disappear.
