Bouygues Plans 2,700 UK Hires Across Construction and Energy Transition Roles

What happened

Bouygues Group has announced plans to hire 30,000 people globally in 2026, with 2,700 of those vacancies in the UK. The French construction and energy giant is already the largest non-British employer in the UK construction sector, with around 20,000 employees.

The UK roles span construction, civil engineering, utilities, and energy transition — recruited across Bouygues UK, Colas Ltd, Colas Rail, and Equans UK & Ireland. Nearly half of the hires will support Equans, the energy services division, reflecting growing demand for heat pump installation, electrical infrastructure, and maintenance work linked to the UK's net zero targets.

Hiring is concentrated in London, Birmingham, and the Liverpool-Manchester corridor, with roles ranging from electricians and works supervisors to project managers and maintenance technicians.

What this means for tradespeople

This is a mixed signal for the UK trades sector. On one hand, it's positive — a major contractor hiring 2,700 people confirms that large-scale project pipelines remain strong, particularly in energy transition and commercial construction. For electricians and heating engineers, the Equans roles are directly relevant.

On the other hand, big contractors hoovering up skilled workers tightens the labour market further. If you're a self-employed tradesperson competing for domestic work, the competition for customers isn't going away — and your Google reviews are what separates you from the next person in the search results.

The UK already has a 166,000-worker skills shortage in construction. More hiring by large firms means fewer available tradespeople for homeowners — which makes the ones who are visible and well-reviewed even more valuable.

What to do about it
